You just got a new Galaxy phone, but now you need a new case! Can you use the same one that you had on your last phone? Or are Samsung cases compatible with every model? Between the Galaxy S, Note, A, J, M, and Z series, Samsung has released over 100 smartphone models. And with so many options to choose from, it’s never been harder to find compatible cases & accessories. We’ll show you exactly which Samsung Galaxy case you need for your new phone, how to find the perfect case, and how the right case can make all the difference in your life. Let's get to it!

Can you use the same Galaxy case for multiple Galaxy phones?

No, you cannot use the same phone case for Samsung Galaxy phones. Unfortunately, each of them have different dimensions, even those within the same series, as well as unique edge shapes, screen sizes, thickness, camera lenses, and button placements. This means you’ll also need to upgrade your phone case when you upgrade to the newest Galaxy.

But there are more things to consider than just the case size & compatibility when shopping around for a new Samsung phone case. A poorly-fitting case leaves your phone vulnerable to cracks, scratches, and other types of damage, which can easily be prevented with the right case. Plus, the wrong size case can partially block your camera lens, limit access to volume & power buttons, and render your phone incompatible with other accessories such as wireless chargers, wallets, and mounts.

Samsung Galaxy Case Size Compatibility Guide for Different Models

Since Samsung entered the mobile phone world in 2009, they’ve introduced over 100 distinct Galaxy models. Each comes with unique features, operating systems, storage capacities, camera lenses, and obviously, dimensions. However, if you're in the market for a new case, your primary concern lies in the dimensions and case compatibility, so let's delve into that.

Which Galaxy phones are the same size?

Unlike iPhone sizes, there are no Galaxy phones that are the same size. However, there are a few that are close in size, similar to Google Pixel phones, with only a few millimeters separating the two.

  • Galaxy S20 and S21 - The S20 and S21 both have the same length & thickness, but the S21 is 0.08” wider than the S20.

  • Galaxy S20+ and S21+ - The S20+ and S21+ are equal in thickness, but the S21+ is 0.1” shorter and 0.08” wider than the S21+.

Even though they’re close in size, it’s worth noting that you should only place your phone into a case that’s designed for your specific model. For example, just because you may be able to squeeze an S20+ model into S21+ case, does not mean you should.

Even within the newest generation of Galaxy phones, the S23s vary in size. Let’s take a look at the varied dimensions of each of the latest models:

What size is my Galaxy phone?

If you’re wondering to yourself: “Do I need to get a new case when I get my new Samsung?,” the answer is yes. Because all of the Galaxy models are different sizes, only one case size will fit your model – they’re not transferable between models. And before you even start to consider what your new case will look & feel like, you need to make sure that it fits.

Below you’ll find the size dimensions for every Galaxy model that’s currently supported by Samsung. Note: These dimensions do not include the added case size.

How do I know which size Galaxy I have?

You could measure your phone with a ruler, a tape measure, or even hold it up next to your friend’s phone to guess the size; but there’s an easier way.

  1. Open the Settings app on your Galaxy
  2. Click About Phone (scroll to bottom)
  3. View Device Name & Model Number

Your model will be listed at the top of the screen.

How to Choose the Right Samsung Galaxy Case

If you already bought your new phone, the hard part is over. Now all you have to do is choose a case that fits your phone, needs, and personality.

Make sure it fits your phone

We’ve already discussed that size is the most important aspect of your phone case. It should firmly hold your phone in place, protecting it from damage while still enabling you to use all of the features & external buttons. If possible, try it on before you buy it to make sure the camera lenses are not covered and each of the buttons & ports is easily accessible.

Pick a protective, durable case

If Galaxy phones were durable enough to handle consistent scratches, cracks, drops, and water damage, you probably wouldn’t be shopping for a case. But we know all too well that accidents happen and cracked backs & screens occur at the most inconvenient times. Your case will protect it from everyday wear & tear and save you from having to replace your phone every few months.

Choose a protective case made from high-quality, durable materials like wood, polycarbonate, or silicone. Both hard & soft cases will prevent damage from frequent drops in the event that they happen, but are also equipped with deep ridges to improve your grip on the phone. And though phones & cases seem to get thinner by the day, a protective case should be designed with raised corners to protect the screen when falling while also allowing your phone room to breathe.

Match your unique style

Our phones have become a part of who we are; our favorite photos, music, and memories are housed in these handheld devices. So you don’t just want a case that fits and protects your Galaxy; it needs to protect what matters most. Because if you damage your phone after forgetting to back all of those memories up on the Cloud, you’ll be sorely disappointed. At Carved, we design totally unique Samsung Galaxy cases that are 1 of One and made from wood burl & colorful resin. They’ll protect your phone from regular drops and look good while doing it.

Check for compatibility

Even with the right model size, full protection, and unique design, your Galaxy case still may have some limitations. All cases add a few extra millimeters to the edges of your device, meaning that the length, width, and thickness will be slightly greater than the table we shared earlier on. You may have to upgrade your car or tripod mount if you want to leave your phone in the case, unless it’s a universal accessory. Many cases also have uneven surfaces or textures, making them unsuitable for accessories like phone wallets, pop sockets, and ring holders. And if you plan to charge your new Galaxy wirelessly, you’ll also need to make sure that your new case is Qi-compatible, the the foundation for MagSafe charging technology

If your new phone case isn’t compatible with your new Galaxy, you’ll have wasted time, money, and frustration. And you’re setting yourself up for a broken phone, quickly. Even though several of the Galaxy S models are close in size, you’re best off purchasing a case designed for your specific model. Those few millimeters will be the difference between your screen cracking or falling out of its own case. Once you have the size figured out, choose a case that works for you; think of things like color, design, accessibility, and protection.
