What a Monolith is

A Block of Art

A Monolith is a one-of-one piece of art: a single block of reclaimed wood burl set in hand-poured epoxy resin, then cut and polished on every face. The burl brings the grain and the live edge, the resin brings the color and the depth, and no two blocks are ever the same.

For years these were the pieces we only ever gave away, one winner at a time. They were never for sale. Now we release them in small batches, and once a piece finds its home it is gone for good.

Handmade in Elkhart, Indiana, where Carved has made one-of-a-kind wood and resin goods since 2011.

How they're made

From burl to block

01

Reclaimed burl

We start with a one-of-a-kind wood burl, the gnarly natural growth most mills treat as waste, with a live edge already in it.

02

Cast in resin

The stabilized burl is set in hand-poured epoxy resin. The color is chosen to play off the grain, and every pour moves differently.

03

Shaped & polished

The block is cut square, then ground and polished on every face by hand, until the resin turns glass-clear and the light passes through.

A finished, named Monolith
04

Named & numbered

Each finished piece gets a name and a number, is photographed on its own, then added to the next release.

Questions, answered

How do the releases work?

Each piece is one of a kind and sells once. When a new batch is ready we put it up here, and the pieces become buyable the moment the release opens. Get on the list and we'll let you know when that is.

Haven't these only been giveaways before?

Yes. For years Monoliths were one-of-a-kind pieces you could only win. We're now releasing a small number of them for sale, a few at a time.

Is each one really unique?

Completely. The burl, the live edge, the resin color, and the way the pour moves are different in every block, so the piece you see in the photo is the exact piece you receive.

How big is it and where do I put it?

They're desk-and-shelf sized, roughly 5 to 7 inches tall. Exact dimensions are on each piece. They look best somewhere light can reach them: a desk, a shelf, or a windowsill.

How is it made and what's it made of?

A reclaimed wood burl set in hand-poured epoxy resin, then shaped and polished by hand in our Elkhart, Indiana shop, where we've made one-of-a-kind wood and resin goods since 2011.

Monoliths are brand new to the shop, so they don't have their own reviews yet. They come from the same workshop our customers have rated five stars more than twenty thousand times. As owners start reviewing their pieces, those reviews show up here.
